Diskfinch for Mac
- Why do I need to choose a folder before scanning?
- Diskfinch runs in Apple's App Sandbox, so it can only look at folders you give it access to. Choose your home folder to scan most of your files, or pick a whole disk under Locations. Diskfinch remembers your choice.
- Some folders show as inaccessible or very small. Why?
- macOS protects certain locations, such as other apps' containers, Mail and system folders. Diskfinch skips those. This is expected and keeps your system safe.
- Are files deleted permanently?
- No. Diskfinch always moves files to the Trash. You can undo with
⌘Z, use Put Back in Diskfinch, or restore them from the Trash in Finder. Files are only gone for good when you empty the Trash yourself. - What is free and what is Pro?
- Scanning, the list and map views, suggestions and duplicate finding are free, and you can clean up 2 GB for free. Diskfinch Pro removes that limit and lets you remove duplicates. Pro is a one-time purchase with no subscription.
- I bought Pro. How do I unlock it on another Mac?
- Sign in with the same Apple ID, open Diskfinch and choose Settings, then Restore Purchase.
- Can my family use Pro?
- Yes. Diskfinch Pro supports Family Sharing. Family members open Diskfinch and choose Restore Purchase if Pro doesn't unlock automatically.
- How does Diskfinch find duplicates?
- It groups files by size, then compares checksums of their contents. Only files that are byte-for-byte identical are shown as duplicates.
- What do I need to run Diskfinch?
- macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on a Mac with Apple silicon or an Intel processor.
Diskfinch for iPhone, iPad and Android
- Why didn't my free space go up after cleaning?
- Cleared photos and videos first go to Recently Deleted (iPhone, iPad) or the Trash (Android) for 30 days, so you can change your mind. The space comes back when they are removed from there. You can empty it yourself in Photos or your gallery app.
- Can I get back something I cleared?
- Yes, for 30 days. On iPhone and iPad, open Photos and go to Recently Deleted. On Android, open your gallery app or Google Photos and go to Trash (Bin).
- I only gave access to some photos. What happens?
- Diskfinch only sees and cleans the photos you shared with it. To scan everything, change the photo access for Diskfinch in your device's Settings.
- Why does an iCloud photo free up less space than shown?
- With Optimise Storage turned on, the full-size original may be stored only in iCloud. Clearing it then mostly frees iCloud space. Duplicates that exist only in iCloud are skipped.
- Does Diskfinch scan by itself?
- Only the very first time. After that it shows your last results and tells you when new photos have arrived. A new scan always asks first.
- How do I keep an item that was selected?
- Untick it. Diskfinch remembers that choice and won't select it again. You can reset these choices in Settings.
- What is free and what is Pro?
- Scanning, the map and reviewing everything are free, and you can clear 2 GB in total for free. Diskfinch Pro removes the limit for all 1.x versions with a one-time purchase. No subscription and no ads.
- How do I restore my purchase or share it with my family?
- Open Diskfinch, go to Settings and tap Restore purchase, signed in with the same Apple ID or Google account. Pro supports Family Sharing (Apple) and Family Library (Google Play).
- How does Download over Wi-Fi work?
- Connect your phone and computer to the same Wi-Fi network, choose Download over Wi-Fi and open the address shown in a browser on your computer. Works with Mac, Windows and Linux. Keep Diskfinch open with the screen on until the downloads are finished.
- What do I need?
- iOS 17 or later on iPhone and iPad, or Android 11 or later.
